IC Urbanism is a theoretical course attended every year by more than 100 students coming from all over the world and having different backgrounds –not only urban planning and architecture but also geography, sociology, anthropology, economics, etc.–. Since this is a theoretical course –not a studio–, the main objective is to introduce a critical survey of some main issues which features practices and tools of contemporary urban planning and urban design. Yet, in parallel to the theoretical study, the course also enhances the students’ different origins and backgrounds by proposing to carry out, a class practice consisting of a critical review about a relevant contemporary urban plan or project. The rules are that projects must come from all over the world and must be very recent –usually, from the last decade. The aim is that students give a concise and critical presentation of the most significant aspects of these projects, through drawings and redrawings, as well as interpretations of data, interviews, and literature.
